Soup Supper Benefits Area Veterans

“The more money we make, the more people we can help,” said Northwest Iowa American Legion Riders (ALR) president Allen Willet. “The Soup Supper is one way for us to generate funds.”

Held February 27 at the American Legion Hall in Le Mars, the Soup Supper is open to the public. Chili and potato soup will headline the meal, available for a free-will offering. Members of the Northwest Iowa ALR volunteer to bring desserts and work the event.

“There will be quite a few folks wearing black motorcycle vests helping out,” Willett continued. “We’re committed to our cause.”  The ALR is a group of motorcycle enthusiasts affiliated with the American Legion. “Our goal is to help veterans and their families in the area,” explained Willett. “The funds we raise stay here in Northwest Iowa.”

In the past the Northwest Iowa ALR has helped local veterans with deal with financial issues, supported the Siouxland Sleep Out, donated items to the area VA hospitals, and has supported the American Legion in their quest to keep veterans’ issues in the forefront, as well as assisted with honoring veterans who have passed away.

The Soup Supper helps the ALR raise funds for such endeavors.

The group meets at 1 p.m. the third Sunday of each month at the American Legion Wasmer Post 241 in Le Mars. Guests are welcome, but to be eligible to join one must be a member in good standing of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or the Sons of the American Legion and own a street legal motorcycle of at least 350cc, or be the spouse of an ALR member. Details can be found on their web site, www.nwiaalr.com.
